Plus Size Fashion in the Colder Months - Choosing the Right Plus Size Coat For Your Body Type

You are a fashionable and stylish plus size gal. But as it starts to get cooler, you start to shiver, and not just with the cold! It is only recently that manufacturers and designers have started to realize that not everyone wears a size 6 or 8 or even a 10. In fact, 60% of North American women wear a size 14 or above. Great news for those of you belonging to the majority of 6 from 10 women!

Up until now, shopping for plus size coats has been a depressing experience, to say the least. Sloppy, boxy cut coats that were more reminiscent of tents than fashionable outerwear were the rule. Designers have started to come around to the fact that 60% of their clients are plus sized and have started designing trendy plus size fashion for us. This reflects not only in the choices available but also in the price for trendy pieces. Whereas plus size clothing was either lower quality or much more expensive (or both!) than regular sizes, today we have a plethora of styles and fits to choose from.

Plus size coats shopping should be a priority on your clothing list. For many of us, we will be wearing our coats for 5 months straight. No matter how great your outfit is, how well put together you are, if you are throwing an old shabby coat over your outfit all anyone will see is...a shabby coat!

Buying a plus size coat or jacket is like shopping for any other article of clothing. Knowing your body type will help you decide on the best style and fit for you. Here are my 2009 fall/winter favorites for the typical 5 body types:

Pear body types, which are those girls who have a larger bottom half and a small upper half, should be looking for coats and jackets with lots of upper styling. Pockets, Epaulettes, and Glitter-the new military look was made for you. Also, shawl necked coats or coats with big collars help balance out your shape.

Apple body types, have thick waists and generally slender legs. You should be looking for coats and jackets that disguise your belly. Capes, being the major look of the season, are a fantastic option for you but stay away from capelets, which will make you look more pronouncedly apple.

Inverted Triangle body types, meaning those girls whose shoulders are much wider than their hips and waist should draw attention from their shoulders area by putting an emphasis on their great hips and legs. Woolen coats with a wider skirt will give you massive curve appeal, as will anything with a flared hem. Capes can leave you looking somewhat bulky by hiding your best assets and hanging off the widest part of your body.

Straight body types, the ones with hips, waist and hips all of a similar size should concentrate on adding curves while keeping their balanced proportions. Stay away from large collared or belted coats. Look for draped, loosely falling materials. A capelet could look better on you than a cape, especially if it hits about hip bone level, adding a little width to your hips.

Hourglass body types can basically wear what they choose. Remember to keep your curves in proportion by not over-emphasizing any one part of your body. If you have lots of detailing on the top, make sure there is detailing around the hip area as well (big pockets, or similar detailing to the top). Anything belted will generally look great on you, but stay away from short, blousey jackets that tend to make you look top-heavy.
